These are the ranges reported by inland applicants generally — not by May 2025 applicants specifically. What the abbreviations mean
- AOR Acknowledgement of receipt
- IRCC confirms the application is complete and in the system. The clock most people count from.
- SPR Sponsor eligibility
- The sponsor is assessed separately from the applicant. Passing it does not decide the application, only that the sponsor may sponsor.
- BIL Biometrics instruction letter
- The letter asking for fingerprints and a photo. Giving them is quick; the letter is the milestone people record.
- MIL / MR Medical instruction letter, or medical request
- The request to complete an immigration medical exam. Often arrives close to the biometrics letter, sometimes months apart.
- PAL Pre-arrival letter
- Sent to applicants approaching approval, with settlement information. Some receive an early one shortly after sponsor eligibility instead — the two are easy to confuse and mean very different things about how far along a file is.
- PPR Passport request
- The request for a passport so the visa can be issued. For outland applicants this is the one that means it is done.
- COPR / eCOPR Confirmation of permanent residence
- The document confirming permanent residence, issued electronically for most applicants finalising in Canada.
